While you’re all sitting around the table this Thanksgiving getting your fill of turkey and stuffing. Here is some great conversational facts you can WoW your friends and family with this holiday.

Get ready to share these 7 fun facts about Thanksgiving.

1. A New Tradition Sweeps America:

TV dinners have Thanksgiving to thank. In 1953, someone at Swanson misjudged the number of frozen turkeys it would sell that Thanksgiving — by 26 TONS! Some industrious soul came up with a brilliant plan: Why not slice up the meat and repackage with some trimmings on the side? Thus, the first TV dinner was born!

2. Honest Abe Declares Thanksgiving a National Holiday

When Abe Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday, it was thanks to the tireless efforts of a magazine editor named Sarah Josepha Hale. Her other claim to fame? She also wrote the nursery rhyme, “Mary had a Little Lamb.”

3. Benjamin Franklin Wanted To Make The Turkey America’s National Bird

If Ben Franklin did, the turkey would be our national bird. An eagle, he wrote in a letter to his daughter, had “bad moral character.” A turkey, on the other hand, was a “much more respectable bird.”

4. I Can’t Take It Anymore!

Here’s one of those funny Thanksgiving facts: Turkeys have heart attacks. When the Air Force was conducting test runs and breaking the sound barrier, fields of turkeys would drop dead.

5. That’s Billion with a “B”

91% of Americans eat turkey on Thanksgiving Day. That comes out to about 290,000,000 people! To put the difference of a billion vs. a million in perspective, let me ask you a question.

Do you know what a million seconds ago was? It was about 12 days ago. A billion seconds ago was just under 32 years ago!

By the way the same math holds true regarding the difference between a millionaire and a billionaire… I’m just saying…

6. Honey It Was A One Time Thing… I Swear

In October of 1777 all 13 colonies celebrated Thanksgiving for the first time; however it was a one-time affair commemorating a victory over the British at Saratoga.

7. Who You Calling Turkey?

There are three places in the United States named after the holiday’s traditional main course — Turkey, Texas; Turkey Creek, La.; and Turkey, N.C. There are also nine townships around the country named “Turkey,” with three in Kansas.
